Yelena Popova was born in 1978 in a small town in the Urals where Russia built the first atomic bomb during the Cold War. Between 1995-2000 she studied Set Design and Technology at the Moscow Art Theatre School (MHAT), and later worked for three years as Assistant Designer to the Artistic Director for the Stanislavski Music Theatre in Moscow. During this time she also taught part time on the Set Design degree course at MHAT.
Since 2003 Yelena has lived in the UK working as an artist, gallery assistant, teacher, interpreter/ production manager and is currently completing an MA in Art & Space at Kingston University in London. She is a member of the Oldknows Studio Group in Nottingham and regularly takes part in exhibitions in the UK and abroad, including the Moscow Young Artist Biennale in July 2008.
Yelena produces video streams of drawings and sequential 'wall-running paintings'. She self-publishes 'A-Musing' artist journal and creates public performances that comment on the position of the artist-maker (painter) in today's consumer society. Yelena describes herself as 'a science-dreamer, an artist with interests in complexity, soundscape and time'.
