Artist's Statement
Being continualy bombarded with images of beautiful, slim young girls
by the media evokes enormous pressure on women today to acquire the
perfect figure. The UK cosmetics and toiletries market is at least
£4.5bn.
Advertising total is more than £553m. The possibilities available
to us to achieve the ideal image includes endless dieting regimes
to more radical methods of liposuction and potentially dangerous surgical
procedures.
Breast implants have become 'fashion accessories'. Consumerism has
been criticised for its corruption and premature sexualisation of
children.
My work is influenced by
the fact that if all women achieve this (stepford Wives) ideal image,
beauty becomes a uniform, women will fade into the landscape hiding
behind the camouflage of the beauty industry. We are unrealistic about
the true appearence of the body, the media's use of digital technology
to manipulate images of women create impossible standards, beauty
by its nature is a rarity. My aim is to show the assimilation of nature
and technology and the ordinary
re-presented as a glamourous commodity.
